Setting off to Perth from Brisbane

 

Why would anyone want to drive a car across Australia?

Yet, here I am, preparing to drive from Melbourne to Denmark in Western Australia for fun.  Well not actually purely for fun, but the emotion is definitely of exhilaration.  Let me explain the method in my madness.

My daughter, Joanna, has a new job in Denmark, some 200km South of Perth, but she left Melbourne in a hurry, leaving her Mitsubishi ASX behind.

I must say that I’ve had this nagging desire to drive across the Nullarbor and so here’s my opportunity…. But… will WA allow me?

Fortunately I've been living in Queensland visiting my mother-in-law for the last few weeks, so I am COVID free.

 So... I got on-line and applied for a permit to transport the vehicle.

 YES!

 Permit emailed to me.

I had to confirm I haven’t been with any dirty Victorians or Sydney Siders for 14 days.

 And because I’m performing a one-off freight/cartage function, I have received a permit.

 So… it’s on, and the good news is, you’re coming with me.

The plan is to take some photos along the way and keep you abreast of my nutty desire to drive the breadth of Australia, just to deliver my daughter and her family the vehicle she had to leave behind.



My journey starts NOW.  I’m flying Brisbane to Melbourne to pick up my car in the short-term carpark (they didn’t have any customers for the long-term carpark when we departed Melbourne, so they put me under cover at the terminal).

From there, I’ll self isolate for the evening.  Pack the vehicle, and early tomorrow, set off for Gawler, South Australia where I have booked accommodation.

Of course I have my SA permit to do so.

Coffin Bay to Adelaide

Today I drove from Coffin Bay to Adelaide. Its only 704 km.   I left about 7:15am, and arrived at my hotel at 5:15pm. Easy peasy. Along the way I stopped for some silo art. This one is at Tumby Bay. A very nice bakery is at Tumby Bay too. This artwork was at Cowell. An option on a weekday is to put your car on a ferry at Cowell.  That way you can cross the Spencer Gulf relaxing on the ferry instead of driving up to Port Augusta and back down to Wallaroo.  That saves 4 hours driving (375km).  The ferry takes about 2hrs 45mins. The ferry timing on Sunday didn't suit me, so I just drove the whole way in the car.  Also, I wanted to get a second COVID test done, and they had a mobile unit setup at Port Augusta that operated on the Sunday.   The drive from Port Augusta to Adelaide takes you through huge farmlands.  I decided I'd give you another 360 degree video along the way.   A single photo snap just doesn't translate the immensity of ...

Melbourne to Gawler

The drive begins.  First stop Coffee & Soul for my double-shot latte and toasted banana bread. They were open for my 6:40am departure - a welcomed relief indeed. I then set off down Burke Rd towards the freeway and my first photo opportunity presents itself - 3 hot-air balloons.  Out comes the camera within the first 3 minutes of driving to WA: The camera stayed on the front seat untouched for the next couple of hours.  Freeway works held me up a bit, but once I got onto the Western Highway, the traffic wasn't too bad.  Mind you, at 7am why would you expect anything else? Bacon and egg burger at Maccas Ballarat went down well.   Here's some windmills that you've all probably seen.
